In-Depth Film Reviews and Insightful Cinema Commentary

At Bounds of Cinema, I celebrate the art of film through multi-layered reviews and engaging commentary on cinema history and style. My mission is to enlighten film viewers by exploring classic masterpieces to contemporary gems. And I will advise you what's good and what's not so good in cinema.

Who is Media and Culture guy, J. Dennis Bounds?

  •   I have a doctorate in the Critical-Cultural Studies of Media from the University of Texas at Austin (“Go Longhorns!”). I’ve taught in the areas of television and film writing, history, and theory – as well as teaching courses in public speaking. I’ve taught at various universities in Texas and Virginia and a number of seminars in Amman, Jordan and Brussels, Belgium.
  • My undergraduate is from Baylor (“Go Bears!”) in “Oral Communication”.
  • My interests are in narrative construction, classic and contemporary film, and analysis. Also, I have published several articles and books on media. My book Perry Mason: The Authorship and Reproduction of a Cultural Hero is a deep dive into the history and cultural impact of the fictional lawyer/detective.
  • I co-authored Divine Film Comedies: Biblical Narratives, Film Sub-Genres, and the Comic Spirit. This book analyzes comedy films by looking at how they explore theology.
  • I am currently finishing up my book Bounds of Cinema: The 52 American Films Everyone Should See. I will let everyone know when it is published.
  • I spent my first eighteen years in Louisiana and my second eighteen years in Texas. Since then, I have lived in Virginia with my wonderful wife, Margaret, and attack poodle, Della -- named after the executive secretary of Perry Mason.
